Our model

Using our unique business model and ethos of providing support and involvement for no cash outlay and receiving a minority shareholding only on success EquityWorks seeks out companies with high growth potential and high ambition.

EquityWorks is building a portfolio of minority investments in high calibre client companies. Using the background and experience of its founders and associates* to work with the owners to jointly prepare plans, provide resources and achieve the targets for growth and company value. EquityWorks will remain an active partner of the company from start to sale or exit.

EquityWorks has close associations with various sources of funding for growth businesses and is Managing Agent of Aurora Private Equity one of Scotland’s leading business angel syndicates, a LINC member and an accredited partner of the Scottish Co-Investment Fund.

Our people

The principals are a team of highly experienced and respected individuals who have run successful businesses in their own right and have subsequently been heavily involved in supporting and investing in early stage and SME companies.

Mike Fleming

Mike Fleming, Chairman

Mike is a graduate of Keele University, holding an MSc. in Engineering Geology from Leeds University, a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Studies from Robert Gordon University and a Diploma in Company Direction from the Institute of Directors. Mike is also a graduate of Henley Business School’s Strategic Management Programme and Destination Coach leadership skills programme in Canada.

Co-founder of Gas2, Mike brings technical and leadership experience from the Upstream Oil and Gas industry, having held a range of senior positions including Commercial Director of Petroleum Engineering Services, and CEO of Welldynamics. Mike was a founding member of Venture Production Company now a successful, listed oil & gas operator. Past appointments include NXD of MTEM Ltd, a world leader in EM technology application to Oil & gas exploration and Head of Oil and Gas at Scottish Enterprise. Currently an independent director on the Boards of RBG (holdings) Ltd & IMES Group Ltd., Mike is also an active investor in small business through Aurora Private Equity Ltd.

Bill Henderson

Bill Henderson, Managing Director

Bill graduated in Geology from Cambridge University. Over the past 37 years, Bill has gained a broad experience as geologist, IT consultant, project facilitator, investor and company director. He was a Principal Scientific Officer in the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh and an international IT consultant and project manager with BP in Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Bill's project facilitation business specialised for many years in helping drilling and sub-surface teams in the oil industry. Bill is an investor in several developing companies in Scotland and was formerly Deputy Chairman of Aurora Private Equity - Aberdeen's principal business angel group. Bill is also the Chairman of Intersum Ltd.

Hamish Milne

Hamish Milne, Commercial Director

A maths and science graduate of Aberdeen University, Hamish is an experienced CEO and CFO. Hamish held a number of key roles and responsibilities as a founder director of one of Scotland's largest private property development groups while also contributing to external public sector and charitable bodies.

An active member of the wider business community, including Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce (where he served as President), Hamish was a founder member and director of local business angel syndicate Aurora Private Equity. Hamish is Commercial Director of Equityworks, interim Finance Director of Intersum Ltd. and is also a director of, and investor in, a number of developing companies in Scotland.

Steve McPhail, Associate DirectorSteve McPhail

Steve holds an Honours degree in Business studies and is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. He has demonstrated consistent success in a finance and business management career spanning more than 25 years in UK and international locations.

Bringing senior finance and leadership experience at global CFO and FD levels, Steve’s experience includes large debt funding, acquisition and equity transactions as well as commercial and business development roles in major global businesses in energy, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and technology, public transport and oil services. Since 2008, he has been running his own successful business as an independent consultant in corporate finance and financial management.
